Anthony Lunch (Founder)
Anthony’s links with the charity go back to the very start when he was running the MondoChallenge volunteering organisation. He set up the charity in 2004 to provide long term sustainable support to the communities where Mondo volunteers were working, enabling them to maintain contact with their projects and to help fund vital development programmes.
However, in many ways all this happened by chance and it really began in 1990 when Anthony and his wife, Martine, visited a remote community in Nepal where their son, Nick, was a volunteer teacher. From that short visit flowed many long term benefits; the meeting with the school Principal, Jiwan Rai (later to become the Foundation’s manager in India), with a pupil, Jimmy Lama (our future manager in Nepal), and of course the seeds of Mondo itself! Until then, Anthony had pursued a career in business, working in UK, Belgium and France. But the challenge of bringing these skills to the charity sector was something he relished and what started as a ‘retirement job’ ended up being a new career!
Having had a hand in starting all the Mondo programmes abroad, Anthony loves the buzz of seeing them grow successfully under local leadership and remaining true to the Foundation’s credo of ‘bottom up development’.
Anthony sadly passed away on October 20th 2022 and is much missed by everyone connected with Mondo.
“There is nothing so inspirational as visiting the schools we are supporting in Nepal and NE India and the wonderful business ladies in Tanzania, and one never tires of this. I am so proud to see what has developed from such small beginnings and excited to think how much more this wonderful MondoChallenge team can yet deliver”.
