CEO Visits Tanzania – Part 3: A Day In The Markets of USA River

Our CEO continued his visit to Tanzania, this time heading to the markets to meet more of our grant and loan recipients. If you’ve missed the earlier blogs, catch up on Part 1 and Part 2. Today we are in Usa River, a flourishing township 30 miles east of Arusha on the Moshi road.  Usa River is hugely spread out and a long dusty road stretches as far as the eye can see. Scattered dwellings are thrown...

CEO Visits Tanzania – Part 2: Meeting Old Friends and New Recipients

Our CEO visited our Tanzania projects and tells us of his time on the ground. This blog sees him reunite with old friends. If you’ve missed it, catch up on Part 1 here. An early morning wake-up call thanks to the loudspeakers from the mosque just around the corner from our hotel.  We know this routine from many stays at Hotel Flamingo over twelve years!  It starts at 5am and last 15 minutes; the call to prayers! One has...

CEO Visits Tanzania – Part 1: Touching Down In Tanzania

Anthony visited our projects in Tanzania in February 2016 and blogged about his experiences on the ground. Read more about his exciting adventures with our local team and the women living with HIV who benefit from our projects. Greetings from Arusha where we arrived this morning after a longish flight via Nairobi.  Mondo TZ Chairman, David Kinisi, met us and we had a good discussion with him en route to the hotel.  One unwelcome change since my last visit is the...

Nepal Earthquake – Chapter 11: Laying New Foundations

1 February 2016 It has been an amazing start to 2016, and our team have been working around the clock without a break to push forward re-building efforts in the Helambu region. We’re proud to announce that January saw the first foundation stones being laid at numerous sites across the valley as our reconstruction project builds momentum. Our team, including a trained local architect who is working on the design and building work, visited a number of schools, including Pading, Birhkarka and...

Tanzania Project Update

This month in Tanzania we are preparing to start a new round of grants and business training in Usa River, near Arusha. We support HIV affected widows to start up small businesses in order to be able to support themselves and their children. This month 13 new beneficiaries will be trained in areas such as attracting customers, calculating profit margins and organising savings. They will bring with them a friend or family member to the training so that they will have...

Nepal Earthquake – Chapter 10: Spreading Warmth In The winter

4 January 2016 Throughout the course of December, we launched a winter appeal to finance the purchase of fleeces and warm hats for the students of the Helambu valley. Winters in Nepal are bitter and harsh. Coupled with the devastation caused by the earthquakes in April 2015 and the total loss of villagers’ belonging, we were worried that students would not be able to make it to school. So our teams worked throughout the Christmas period to distribute warm clothes to the...

MondoChallenge Foundation Lands Influencer Award

MondoChallenge Foundation lands Influencer Award at DSC Social Change Awards ceremony in London We are proud to report that we were presented with the Directory for Social Change’s Influencer Award at a ceremony on 7 December 2015. The award was given for the work of the charity in the three months following the Nepal earthquakes in late April this year. Through our local team, headed by country manager, Jimmy Lama, more than 3000 families received emergency supplies of blankets, tarpaulins, food and...

Nepal Earthquake – Chapter 9: Winter Is Coming

7 December 2015 Earlier this year, Nepal was struck by a number of large earthquakes, the aftershocks of which are still recurring. The sheer scale of devastation was difficult to comprehend and as you know we’ve been working hard with our team on the ground to respond to the many challenges following the tremors. We started with emergency relief supplies, providing much needed food and basic shelter. Then we turned to the schools, building over 220 temporary learning centres to help...

Nepal Earthquake – Chapter 8: The Future Of The Valley

16 October 2015 During August and September, we took a short pause to reflect on the progress that had been made since the two devastating earthquakes earlier in the year. We spoke to community leaders on the ground, and garnered the thoughts of our fantastic team. They’ve been visiting the villages and, as with all our projects, it is the people on the ground who are the most important in helping us to guide our resources. We’d previously hinted about our talks...

Nepal Earthquake – Chapter 7: A Pause For Reflection

14 August 2015 It has been a little while since our last update, but that doesn’t mean that we haven’t been busy. Having fulfilled our short term aim of completing enough Temporary Learning Centres to accommodate 6,500 pupils, we have been using the pause enforced by the monsoon to consider our next steps. Ideally, we would like the building of permanent classrooms to commence in earnest once the rains slow and the ground firms up. But more on that in a...
