Follow the visit of one of our trustees, Hirsh, to Nepal as he works to introduce our Quality Education Project to schools in Nepal. He also took some time to visit India to follow-up on work done last year on the India Quality Education Improvement Project by another of our trustees, Ruth. A disastrous start to my India/Nepal trip as I missed my connecting flight in Delhi yesterday due to some flight delays. Very much hoping that isn’t an omen for...
As people all over the world start show that they are Being Bold For Change, we wanted to reflect on how our projects change the lives of hundreds of girls and women in Nepal, NE India and Tanzania. Take a look at some of our exciting projects which help empower girls and support women to build a better future. Our flagship HIV grants and loans programme has given widows living with HIV in the areas around Arusha and Moshi in Tanzania...
Louisa Ingham, a recent volunteer at our projects in Nepal, talks us through her exciting adventure in the Helambu valley. At dawn on Wednesday 5th October Chiring, Mohan and I set off on motorbikes to visit Shree Pating Basic School in the Helambu province to check on the progress of the new school being built there, as well as to meet with the village committee to inform them of the amounts spent on the building work so far. As HELP’s Operations...
Emma and Patrick, two medical professionals, recently joined our country manager, Jimmy Lama, on a trek through the Helambu region in which MondoChallenge Foundation and the Helambu Education and Livelihoods Partnership are working to re-build schools following the earthquakes and enhance education. If you’ve missed it, catch up on Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 of their story. Ichowk was the largest village we had visited, and we were glad to arrive at the...
Two medical professionals recently trekked through Helambu, seeing the work our local team are doing first hand in a series of walks through the valley. If you’ve missed it, catch up on Part 1 and Part 2 of their story. Dabchung to Tartong This walk was thankfully less strenuous and mercifully less sunny than the day before. We wove around the beautiful hills, frequently crossing cooling streams and namaste-ing our way through sleepy villages! We saw the school...
Emma and Patrick worked their way through the Helambu valley. In this blog, they talk about their trip through the hills, from Pading Village to Dabchung Village. If you’ve missed it, catch up on Part 1 of their story. Revitalised after a bowl of deliciously spicy noodles at the home of Pading SMC chair, Ganesh Tamang, we began the next leg of our journey to Dabchung, guided by Sancha Tamang, the chairperson of the school there, whose family would...
Emma and Patrick, two medical professionals, recently joined our country manager, Jimmy Lama, on a trek through the Helambu region in which Mondo and the Helambu Education and Livelihoods Partnership are working to re-build schools following the earthquakes and enhance education. This is the first part of a series of blogs on their journey into Helambu. We began our journey from Kathmandu by jeep, kindly being given a lift by an engineer and his family, with 7 of us all squeezed...
Scholarship season is now in full swing at Mondo local partner HELP’s office in Kathmandu. The Helambu students seem to have taken the earthquake last year as a spur as the results for the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exams are better than ever this year, with more than ever reaching the minimum level for being considered for a HELP scholarship to a college for the “Plus 2” (“A” Level) course that will set them on course for a career. As a result...
Late last year we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nepali government that we would rebuild as necessary 15 of the Helambu schools which Mondo has been supporting that had been completely destroyed or badly damaged as a result of the April 2015 massive earthquake. The MOU committed us to rebuild the schools in a two year period and even before it was signed we have been raising funds from our generous donors, planning and agreeing our designs for...
Read the next part of Nitish Upadhyaya’s blog from his recent visit to Nepal. If you haven’t read it yet, catch up on Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4. Although I’m approaching the last few days of my visit, we find time to squeeze in another trip to Helambu. It’s a special trip for another reason too – we’re going to take Jasmine, Jimmy’s four-month-old for her first adventure to Helambu. I’m honoured just...
